Has anyone ever quit this stuff? I have been taking it for about a month and have decided that I don't want to use it as a crutch anymore. However, I know it is addictive and I need to taper off slowly. Quitting has proven to be harder then I thought. Anyone have any experience with this?

Have you talked to your doctor?
I would say lower your dosage and wean yourself off, that is usually easier than most, or you can go cold turkey, have withdrawls, and possibly relapse. I know when I got off my meds I just stopped, and it was easy, but that is because I didn't want to take them and they made me sick.

I started tapering my dose a few days ago and today I'm a bit of a wreck. I'm just drinking some chamomile tea and hoping I feel better soon. Oh and this board helps keep my mind occupied. Hooray for you people!

I smoked a lot of pot, so I still in a way self medicate, but at least that is natural. Chamomile helps, so does lavender.

Smoking is awesome and used to help but now it seems to make me more anxious. Sad huh! :(
Cigs are uppers, thats could cause an anxiety spurt.
First step into getting off of benzos (Pay attention, if you GO COLD TURKEY YOU'LL DIE. not everyone dies, but, it is one of the most dangerous withdrawls next to liqour.)
Talk to your doctor and have him set you up on a stepdown dosage to wain you off it.
If you cant do that, plan out over 3 monthes to slowly take less and less. Every week lower your daily dosage by 10%.
But talk to a doctor first, because even that may be to quick, depending on how long you have been taking them, how much, how often.

switch to klonopin, it doesnt hit you as hard and you dont have to take as much.. unless your trying to get off benzo's completley.. i wouldnt suggest stop taking them cold turkey (of course consult your doctor).. lower your dosage by half weekly or bi weekly until your off of them.. also can get cava (all natural anti-anxiety) from wal-mart for 15$$ for like 50 of them.. ive had problems with xanax.. i take klonopin now :D:D:D

Smoking is awesome and used to help but now it seems to make me more anxious. Sad huh! :(That is sad, maybe it is just the strain or type, Schwag or Chron? Maybe you need to try the oposite of what you are smoking or different amounts? You are smoking or you smoke too much or too little? But that super sucks.

Some meds you can stop taking, most like that you can't without serious repercussions and sever withdrawls. Mine were anti-depressants, and I have had a lot of experience with them so I knew what I could and could not do.

Hmmmm... thank you for the suggestion. I will call my Dr. today and ask about Klonopin. That cava sounds like it's worth a try as well. And I am taking it slow. I have read some bad things about withdrawals from the Benzos.

I take it for migraines and to help me sleep.... But the one thing is, you can have a panic attack a few days later when you come down. Not everyone has this but a lot do.
But I have been taking it of and on for like 6 years and I dont have problems with it.......
What kind of problems are you having? You can just pm me if you would like and I will give you more details....
Take all the magic voodoo herbal sups you want, just make sure to talk to your doctor. Just because they are herbs doesnt make them safer, some can actually interact with other medications you may be taking.

I don't think a health food/supplement store worker is qualified to say which supps and meds are safe to take together.

This thread just reminded me of how fucked up prescriptions are. I had a discussion with some co workers about how like 70% of the prescription drugs are taken by americans. And we came to the conclusion that its because america is so money driven, half of the doctors dont even give a shit about their patients and by getting their clients addicted to prescriptions just gets them more money. Thats why its almost guarenteed when you go to a psychiatrist, you will end up with some sort of anti depressant or anti anxiety medication. Seems to me that some good counceling and advice can usually bring people out of their problems. But once you start taking the meds it makes it even harder.

ive been taking klonopin for about a year and a half now, and i dont notice anything to horrible when i miss a few days, i take it mostly when im having a pannick attack and it calms me down, but i dont take it unless i need to, i havnt been put on xanax before so i dont know how much the come down differs, but klons have treated me really well, i dont notice a difference when im on or off of them other than not having pannick attacks

*** Warning on Kava****
Kava, an extract of a species of pepper plant (Piper methysticum), is widely touted as a natural alternative to antianxiety medications. Though some clinical trials have found that it works, possibly by a mechanism similar to that of benzodiazepines, there are concerns here and abroad about its safety.
The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports that it may cause serious liver toxicity, including cirrhosis and liver failure. About 25 people in Germany and Switzerland developed liver toxicity after using products containing kava.
The FDA has also received several reports of toxic reactions in this country. In one case, a previously healthy young woman required a liver transplant after taking a dietary supplement containing kava. In addition, there was a report several years ago of a patient falling into a coma after using kava with the benzodiazepine alprazolam (Xanax).
Following these reports, Germany and Switzerland banned the sale of kava. It’s still available in the United States, but in light of the potential danger, you should avoid this herb.

Getting off of Xanax was (and still is) the hardest thing I've ever had to do in my life. I was on a milligram a day for a year and a half. Imagine trying to get off the shit. I still (6 months later) deal with withdrawal symptons every day. It's terrible. Anxiety is terrible. My life always comes second to anxiety. I feel so stuck in my life now. I wish things could go back to the way they used to be. Anyone have any REAL advice for kicking anxiety? I've tried everything (kava, valerian root, passion whatever, antidepressants, everything). I really need help. Nothing anyone's given me has made the anxiety go away (sadly, except for Xanax). Le Sigh.
.moses.
have you tried meditation? i've found it often calms anxiety.

For a lot of people, the duration has more of an effect than the dosage. Not always, mind you, because it always depends on the person. Either way, that's not what's important. Fixing the problem is what's important and pills don't fix anything...they mask it.

See some people dont go thru with drawls from Xanex. I dont at all. I can take it to sleep and maybe a little groggy the next day but..... idk maybe its because I use it to sleep or just to help with my migraines. I dont take it for anxiety.
Lots of water....... and fresh food helps a lot as in no junk food.
Some people have anxiety attacks a few days later from taking a Xanex but not everyone does. If you are having mass anxiety getting off of them then you might have a mood disorder that should be treated.
