I have never really owned one, but I wanna get one to have so I can start recording things I attend and what not and family outings etc etc.
Anyone have any suggestions? I dont want something that is a ton of money, but something that will record in HD. I would like to try and keep it under 500 but dunno if thats possible.

If you don't mind tapes I would go for the Canon Hv20.
I have used one a few times and the footage in good lighting looks extremely good.

Or if you have a extra $150 or so added to your budget I would get the hf10. I have a hmc150 which records to AVCHD, which for alot of people is a pain in the ass. Cause you have to transcode the clips for alot of editing programs. But no tapes and cheap SD cards makes it way worth it.
You can get 16gig SDHC cards online for like $30.00 each. That will let you record at least 99min on one card in the highest resolution possible on this camera. Also this one films in 1080p instead of 1080i which makes a huge difference.
